Description

1891 Seated Half, MS66
Frosted, Final Year for the Series

1891 50C MS66 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint increased production of half dollars in 1891 to 200,000 pieces, ending 12 years of only nominal mintages. Despite the higher production, there are few high-grade business strikes of the 1891 date available. This example is frosty white with clean, brilliant fields. A series of short abrasions appear along Liberty's right arm. The strike, while generally bold, may be from a late state of the obverse die with weakness at Liberty's head and the two adjacent stars. A die crack circles the obverse, and both sides of this Premium Gem display die clashing. Census: 11 in 66 (1 in 66+, 1 in 66 ★ ), 2 finer (12/13).
