Description
1840-(O) WB-101 Half Dollar, MS62
Popular 'Missing Mintmark' Variety
1840-(O) 50C Medium Letters, WB-101, Die Pair 4, R.3, MS62 PCGS.
CAC. At one time thought to be a Philadelphia Mint issue, the
1840-(O) is essentially a muling of two half dollar series --
pairing a Seated half obverse with an 1839 Bust half reverse (type
of 1838 with Medium Letters and a larger eagle). 1839-O Bust halves
had an obverse mintmark, thus the leftover reverse die lacked a
mintmark. Interestingly, two 1840 O-mint varieties were minted with
the same omission, when later in the emission sequence a different
obverse was paired with the same reverse. This is a pleasing and
lustrous silver-gray example, with a touch of weakness on the
obverse high points but a sharp reverse despite numerous die
cracks. Population (all Medium Letters varieties): 4 in 62, 5
finer. CAC: 2 in 62, 3 finer (2/20).Selections From The Wind River Collection.
