    1874-CC Arrows Half Dollar, MS63
    Attractively Toned, Substantially Prooflike

1874-CC 50C Arrows, WB-101, Die Pair 1, R.6, MS63 PCGS. The small mintage of just 59,000 pieces was accomplished by three die pairs, with this die marriage the scarcest of the three. The left foot of 1 in the date is above a dentil's center, and an angled die line pierces the second S of STATES at the upper-right serif. The new book by Rusty Goe, The Confident Carson City Coin Collector, points out the 1874-CC Arrows half dollar is essentially equally rare as the 1870-CC and 1878-CC. It is thought that considerably less than 1% of its mintage survives in all grades.

This is a Select Uncirculated example with partially prooflike fields and a bold central strike. A few minor field abrasions are well-disguised among the dappled tan-brown and golden toning that decorates each side. Slight weakness at some of the star centers and Liberty's upper hair curls is offset by a razor-sharp eagle with well-defined talons. PCGS reports just five numerically finer certifications. Population: 6 in 63, 5 finer (5/21).

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
