Description
1838 No Drapery Quarter, MS67
Transitional Quarter Dollar Coinage
The Second Finest Certified
1838 25C No Drapery MS67 NGC. Open Claws. Briggs 1-A. The
obverse features a curved date that is well centered between the
rim and the base of the rock. Another obverse die, Obverse 2, is
documented in The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States
Liberty Seated Quarters, although the author, Larry Briggs,
suggests that "because of the mintage [of coins], other minor
varieties surely exist." Obverse 2 is only known in the extremely
rare Briggs 2-B die marriage, which is famously referred to as the
"closed claw reverse" variety. All known 1838 Seated twenty-five
cent pieces are of the No Drapery type--a designation pertaining to
the lack of drapery under Ms. Liberty's left elbow. This feature
was modified in 1840 by engraver Robert Ball Hughes who, among
other things, added drapery to the effigy of Liberty in the name of
"respectability," according to Breen (1988).1838 was the inaugural year of the Liberty Seated quarter design, which replaced the Capped Bust quarter series. Interestingly, 1838-dated Capped Bust pieces were struck until mid-year, resulting in two distinctly different designs with the same date. A similar scenario occurred in 1837, when both the half dime and dime transitioned from John Reich's Bust design to Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Seated concept.
The current offering is a stunningly beautiful survivor of this first-year issue quarter dollar. Russet and navy-blue iridescence frames cream colored centers on both sides of this Gem specimen. As typically found on most examples of this variety, weakness in the obverse dentilation is observed. The luster is satiny and the fields are seemingly free of abrasions or other poststrike flaws. However, we make note of planchet roller marks that affect the obverse rim and, more noticeably, Liberty's thigh and right forearm. These marks, being inherent to the minting process, do not detract from the eye appeal of this Superb Gem specimen. Census: 1 in 67, 0 finer (2/25).
