Description

Seldom Encountered 1842-O Large Date Quarter, MS64

1842-O 25C Large Date MS64 PCGS. Briggs 2-A. The upper part of the top loop of the 8 is heavily recut. The reverse is easily distinguished by the lower positioning of the mintmark. By far the more frequently encountered of the two date size variants. The 1842-O is generally well struck for an O-mint quarter, and this piece certainly bears out that generalization. There are no traces of softness on either side of this splendid piece; in fact, if the mintmark were covered the strike on this coin would be indistinguishable from a P-mint quarter. The bright satiny surfaces are toned on each side but a couple of shades deeper on the reverse. In spite of the mintage of more than three-quarters of a million pieces, the 1842-O is a rare coin in mint condition. Population: 16 in 64, 0 finer (8/08).
