Description

1842-O 25C Small Date VG 8 SEGS. Briggs 1-A Die State. While all 1842-O Small Date quarters should be considered quite rare, Larry Briggs (1991) asserts that only about 10% of the extant population comprises pieces of this die variety. Heavy damage to the reverse die resulted in a depression through the horizontal shield lines and a resulting loss of detail on the surrounding feathers. Despite its heavy wear, this coin still evidences this curious feature. The recessed areas exhibit deep charcoal toning that lightens to pale gray over the highpoints. This is a rare specimen that is of obvious importance to ardent Seated quarter collectors.
