Description

Historic 1842-O Quarter

1842-O MS 63 PCGS. Large Date. Fully brilliant, this impressive piece shows some light evidence of old spotting around the upper obverse device. Well struck for a New Orleans issue, with negligible light contact marks. Quite possibly from the October 1982 Meridien Hotel hoard, where a box of silver coins was discovered when a backhoe struck the box in the muddy excavation pit of the hotel construction site. 1842 was the latest date found in the hoard, although most of the pieces exhibited unremovable encrustation on the rims. Briggs rates this date R.7 in mint state, and at the MS 63 level, PCGS has graded just three pieces with one finer (5/97).
