Description

Gem Uncirculated 1844-O Quarter, MS 66, Ex: Pittman

1844-O MS 66 NGC. Ex: Pittman. An indisputable rarity in uncirculated, a definite prize from the New Orleans Mint as such, and the finest example of the date certified by NGC as well. Purchased by John J. Pittman for the princely sum of $5.50 in 1948 (those were the days). When sold by David Akers in May, 1998, he noted in his catalog description that the coin was: "very sharply struck, particularly on the figure of Liberty and the eagle which are absolutely fully defined." Some trivial striking weaknesses were noted in the catalog, with a few of the obverse stars being the culprits, otherwise his praise was high and consistent with the overall quality of the coin. The piece is steel-gray in the background with patches of violet, rose, and lilac-gray color splashed willy-nilly upon both sides, giving the coin a mottled but not unsightly appearance overall. We don't expect that any more uncirculated '44-O quarters will be making an appearance in the marketplace in the immediate future, so strong bids and strong hearts are suggested when this rarity crosses the auction block.
Ex: Walrath Collection (Numismatic Gallery, 5/48), lot 475; Pittman Collection (Akers, 5/98) lot 1311.
