Description

Pretty, Low-Mintage 1848 Quarter, MS63

1848 25C MS63 NGC. Briggs 2-B, 1/1/1-8/8. The first digit shows the base of a superfluous 1 near the base, with a horizontal line from another 1 about halfway up the upright. The last 8 is repunched, with doubling showing at the bottom left loop. Wispy die cracks touch the bottoms of the date digits, several of the stars (some of which show recutting), and the liberty cap. The reverse is the "plain shield" variety (per Briggs) with large thick letters, although, unusually, there are few "spider cracks" connecting the peripheral legends. The obverse is silver with a ring of gold, while the reverse shows iridescent almond and steel-blue tones. An interesting and pretty example of this low-mintage issue, seldom seen finer.
Ex: Harmer Rooke, 1986.
