    Elusive Early Seated Liberty Issue

    1848 25C MS64 NGC. CAC. Briggs 1-A. This piece represents the scarcer doubled date variety, with all four date numerals widely repunch right. The other variety for this issue exhibits triple punching on the 1 in the date, and double punching on the second 8. No plain date varieties are known. This Choice example displays blended olive-gold and sea-green toning over each side, with satiny underlying mint luster. The eagle's left (facing) leg is slightly soft, though the strike is otherwise well-executed. Census: 3 in 64, 2 finer (10/14).(Registry values: P5)
