Description

Choice Repunched Date 1848 Quarter

1848 25C MS64 NGC. Ex: Sweet Collection. Briggs 2-B, triple-punched 1, double-punched 8. Three serifs show on the bottom left of the 1, and the bottom of the 8 is doubled. On the so-called "Plain" reverse, the peripheral letters are large and thick, and light die cracks connect many of the letters. The silver-white surfaces are well struck and show no singular distractions, save for a couple of contact marks in the reverse field above the eagle. This is a scarce coin above Very Fine, regardless of the variety. NGC and PCGS combined have certified four coins (of both known Briggs varieties) in MS64, with three pieces finer (8/07).
Ex: Rod Sweet Collection (Bowers and Merena, 3/04), lot 1342.
