Not Sold Description
Very Rare 1849-O Quarter--AU 50--Ex: Pittman
1849-O MS 61 Cleaned. Previously sold as lot 1316 in The John Jay Pittman Sale where it was described in part as, "Very sharply struck with a full head of Liberty, well defined and most of the stars sharp, although stars 7, 9, and 10 are a little weaker than the others. The coin has light golden toning and has probably been cleaned in the past since it now has heavy hairlines, more on the reverse than on the obverse. There are also a few minor marks in the fields as well as several microscopic planchet chips. This is the lowest mintage New Orleans Quarter of the No Motto type and it is also one of the rarest in all grades." Part of an involved, multi-coin buy/trade deal with dealer Maurice Storck in 1954 while in attendance at the Farouk Sale in Cairo. The bottom line was that Pittman's cost in the coin was approximately $33.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23T3, PCGS# 5414, GSID# 5173)
