    1851-O Quarter, MS62
    Rare in Mint State
    Tied for Finest at PCGS

1851-O 25C MS62 PCGS. CAC. Briggs 1-B. The influx of raw gold from California, off-setting the gold to silver value ratio, brought on widespread melting of minor silver coins in an attempt to profit from their increased bullion value, an act which effectively stunted the survival rate of many early Seated Liberty issues. The low mintage of the 1851-O quarter (just 88,000 coins), only aided in its near-demise. Closely rivaled by the also elusive 1849-O and 1852-O, the 1851-O is among the rarest Seated Liberty quarters produced at the New Orleans Mint; problem-free representatives are scarcely seen in any grade, and PCGS and NGC combined have certified only nine Mint State pieces, though even this paltry number likely includes resubmissions. This piece is tied with a purported two other specimens as the finest certified at PCGS (6/14). Rich burgundy-red, teal, and green-gold toning accents semiprooflike mirroring in the fields on each side, while the strike shows above-average definition for the issue. An exceptional example of this sought-after New Orleans issue.(Registry values: P5)
