Description

NGC 1853 Arrows and Rays MS 63 Questionable Toning. A weight reduction in all subsidiary coinage was called for late in 1853, hence the addition of the arrows at the date, (also the rays on the reverse), to so designate this change. The rays were dropped in 1854, but the arrows remained through 1855. Some deep burnt-orange and blue toning is seen on the obverse, the reverse is mottled-gray.
