Description

1853 Arrows and Rays MS 64 NGC. A choice example of this most popular and well known one year type coin. A weight reduction in all subsidiary coinage was called for late in 1853, hence the addition of the arrows at the date (also the rays on the reverse) to so designate this change. The rays were dropped in 1854, but the arrows remained through 1855. This specimen is satiny with some gray-rose color on the obverse, the reverse is lightly toned.
