    Description

1853 Arrows and Rays Quarter, MS64
    Colorful Border Toning

1853 25C Arrows and Rays MS64 PCGS. In February 1853, Congress legislated that the silver weight of the quarter dollar should be reduced from 6.74 gm to 6.22 gm, to remove the incentive of bullion dealers to melt the coins and instead allow them to circulate. Arrows were added on either side of the date, and rays were placed around the eagle on the reverse. This is an impressively lustrous example of the Arrows and Rays one-year type, displaying light golden toning over each side that deepens to blue and violet around the margins. A few small, unobtrusive abrasions are peppered about.
