1853 Arrows and Rays Quarter, MS65
    Coveted One-Year Type Coin

1853 25C Arrows and Rays MS65 PCGS. CAC. By the early 1850s, the large inflows of California-mined gold dramatically increased the gold value of silver, as the white metal became relatively scarce. For example, the value of four silver quarters increased to over $1.03 in gold in 1851. Silver exports began to exceed imports at a staggering rate, increasing by $21 million from 1850 to 1851. Silver coin mintages plummeted, and those pieces that were struck did not enter into circulation. A solution to this problem came in 1853, when Congress passed a law reducing the weight of dimes, quarters, and half dollars. Newly minted lightweight coins were designated with arrows flanking the date and rays surrounding the eagle on the reverse, creating a one-year type that has become highly prized among collectors.

This frosty, eye-appealing Gem displays glistening luster over brilliant surfaces that show the slightest tinge of golden-tan patina. The stars and Liberty's head are typically incomplete, while the eagle's feathers, talons, and fletchings are well-detailed. A spindly die crack connects the left arrowhead, the rock, and the rim below star 1, and two tiny milling marks in the right obverse field act as pedigree identifiers.
