Rare, Unusual 1853/4 Arrows Quarter, MS 63
1853/4 Arrows and Rays MS 63 Artificial Toning. One of the strangest overdates in U.S. coinage history. According to Breen, this was an obverse die that was made in late 1853 when dies were being prepared for usage in both 1853 and 1854. Apparently, this obverse die received a blow from an 1854 logotype, then several heavier ones from the 1853, resulting in this curious variety. Lustrous surfaces and well defined, the vertical shaft of the 4 clearly shows under the 3 of the date. Some questionable gold and crimson color overlays the obverse.Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 5427, GSID# 5177)
