Popular and Scarce 1853/4 Arrows and Rays Variety

1853/4 25C Arrows and Rays AU 55 PCGS. Briggs 1-A. With crisp definition and untoned surfaces, this lustrous piece would fit comfortably into any prized collection of Seated coinage. As befits a circulated silver coin, both the obverse and the reverse exhibit numerous, scattered circulation marks that do not, however, inhibit the overall eye appeal. A very scarce variety of this popular one-year type, suitable magnification reveals remnants of a vertical bar within the top inside the loop of the 3. While the 1999 Guide Book, as well as the major grading services, refer to this underdigit as a 4, Larry Briggs (1991) believes that this assertion is false. The author does not, however, proffer an alternative explanation to support his thesis. Faint repunching is also visible near the top upright of the 5, although the unaided eye is also too weak to discern this feature. Regardless of its true identity, this repunched die variety is elusive in all grades and particularly so above the XF grade tier. Population: 1 in 55, only 5 finer (6/99).
