One of The Finest Known 1853/4 Arrows and Rays Seated Quarter, MS63 PCGS

1853/4 25C Arrows and Rays MS63 PCGS. One of the strangest overdates in U.S. coinage history. According to Breen, this was an obverse die that was made in late 1853, when dies were being prepared for usage in both 1853 and 1854. Apparently, this obverse die received a blow from an 1854 logotype, then several heavier ones from the 1853, resulting in this peculiar variety. Well defined and untoned, with highly lustrous surfaces, the vertical shaft of the 4 clearly shows under the 3 of the date. A very clean and attractive example of this numismatic curiosity, and one of the finest known. Only a single piece has been graded higher by PCGS. Population: 7 in 63, 1 finer at both services (3/04).
