Description
Sharply Contrasted
1853/4 Arrows and Rays Quarter, MS64
Tied for Finest Certified
1853/4 25C Arrows and Rays MS64 PCGS. Briggs 1-A. This
enigmatic overdate shows a mistaken final-digit punch from the next
year rather than the previous year. This die state shows the upper
portion of the 4 within the top of the 3, and it also plainly
displays the repunching above the right arrow shaft. Only 20 pieces
have been certified in mint condition by both of the major grading
services. At the MS64 level, this coin is tied with two others as
finest certified (8/08). This is a lovely coin that has the usual
strong mint luster one would expect on an 1853 quarter. This
lustrous finish serves to backlight the gray-olive surfaces that
have a strong contrast of charcoal-gray over the devices. Sharply
struck and seemingly defect-free.Ex: Auction '89 (Superior's Session, 7/1989), lot 577.
