1853/53 No Arrows Quarter, MS67
Fully Struck and Beautifully Toned
1853/53 25C No Arrows, Briggs 1-A, FS-301, MS67 PCGS. CAC.
The date on this spectacular Superb Gem shows repunching on the
last two digits, with the undertype 53 easily visible to the south
of the primary digits. This variety was previously listed as an
overdate 1853 Over 2, but close examination reveals the final digit
was definitely struck over a 3. This is the only known die pair for
the date that does not feature the Arrows and Rays design, which
was introduced later in the year to indicate a weight change. Many
examples of the 1853 No Arrows type were immediately melted because
their intrinsic value was greater than their face value, making the
issue fairly elusive today..The present coin is a wonderfully toned example of this popular issue. The underlying mint luster is thick and frosted, glowing brightly through the layers of color. Fully struck in all areas. Population: 2 in 67, 0 finer (5/14).
