Collectible Fine 1854-O Huge O Quarter

1854-O 25C Huge O Fine 12 PCGS. FS-004. Briggs 1-A. The popular 'Huge O' quarter has an uncommonly high relief, and its borders are unduly thick, as well. Specialists believe the mintmark was hand-engraved into the working reverse die, probably because no one at Philadelphia entered the mintmark before the die was hardened. No thought was given to discarding the die, since heavy production of new tenor silver coins was needed to replace hoarded old tenor examples. This slate-gray example has nearly a full LIBERTY, and drapery and plumage detail is evident. Population: 4 in 12, 24 finer (8/08).(Registry values: P7)
