Rarely Seen MS64 1855-S Arrows Quarter

1855-S 25C Arrows MS64 PCGS. CAC. The 1855-S quarter circulated widely among the California mining communities, so that most survivors are well worn or damaged. Mint State pieces are few and far between. Indeed, Larry Briggs assigns them a high R.6 rarity rating in his 1991 Liberty Seated Quarters reference. PCGS and NGC have graded only 15 Uncirculated examples.
While most Mint State 1855-S quarters are weakly struck, this near-Gem specimen exhibits crisp definition, save for minor softness on the hair atop Liberty's head. Whispers of light gray and olive-tan reside on both sides, which display vibrant luster. A few light contact marks and grazes deny Gem status. Population: 3 in 64, 1 finer (4/09).
