Description

Interesting 1856-S Quarter, XF45
High Date, High Mintmark

1856-S 25C XF45 PCGS. Briggs 3-D. This variety is characterized by the unusually high placement of the date, and on the reverse the mintmark is partially imbedded in the feather above. In spite of the generous mintage of more than a quarter million coins the 1856-S is seldom located in AU or Uncirculated grades. The surfaces of this piece show medium gray patina overall with contrasting near-brilliant high points. The fields are slightly roughened from circulation, but the only singularly mentionable defect is a planchet flake out of the right obverse field.(Registry values: P7)
