Description

Fascinating 1856-S/S Quarter, Briggs 4-E

1856-S/S 25C VF 20 SEGS. Briggs 4-E. Richly and evenly toned in olive-gray patina, this coin displays remarkably smooth surfaces for a circulated piece. All major design elements are bold and the rims are intact. The rarest die variety of this issue, the Mint produced this reverse die when it punched the proper large S mintmark over an erroneous small S. Suitable magnification easily reveals the boldly defined undermintmark. Larry Briggs (1991) speculates that between 10 and 15% of all extant 1856-S quarters are of the Large S/Small S die variety. A popular and widely collected variety, we anticipate significant competition for this moderately worn representative.
