Rare XF 1859-S Seated Quarter1859-S 25C XF40 NGC. Briggs 1-A, the only known dies. This is a scarce issue in all grades, and no true Mint State examples are known, although a few AU coins are certified at NGC and PCGS. This piece shows deep smoke-gray toning evenly covering both sides, with the usual die crumbling around several of the obverse stars. A few shallow scrapes appear to the left of the date, but otherwise the coin is characterized by even wear with no singular distractions. Briggs calls the issue "rare" in XF and "extremely rare" in AU. Census: 4 in 40, 5 finer (8/08).
