Elusive High Grade Gem 1861 Seated Quarter, MS66 PCGS

1861 25C MS66 PCGS. The 1861 is the last of the high mintage Seated Quarters before the resumption of specie payments in the 1870s. As such, it is also the only readily obtainable issue from the Civil War era. This is not to suggest, however, that the 1861 is a common issue at the Gem level, for high grade Seated Quarters of all dates are few and far between. In fact, this is the finest example we have had the pleasure to offer since we began keeping archived auction records. The fully frosty surfaces show a few scattered abrasions in the right obverse field, but these are negated by colorful arcs of natural azure-blue and reddish-golden toning seen on each side. The strike is sharp although a few of the star centrils on the left side of the obverse are a little short of full definition. Population: 9 in 66, 4 finer (3/04).
