Description

1861 Seated Quarter, MS67
Brilliant Surfaces, Pinpoint Sharp

1861 25C MS67 PCGS. Type Two Reverse -- the eagle's eye is convex. A large pre-Civil War mintage numbered more than 4.8 million pieces struck, a mintage that preceded suspension of specie payments. The Philadelphia Mint quarter production declined precipitously thereafter until 1866, when a mere 16,800 quarters were struck. A slow increase accompanied the postwar years and by 1876 a monumental 17.8 million-piece mintage was accomplished for the nation's centennial year.
Despite the large 1861 quarter dollar mintage Superb Gems are notable rarities. Less than two dozen such coins exist. Few of those can match the brilliant, frosted surfaces of this spectacular MS67 example. Snow-white surfaces are razor-sharp. A loupe reveals only a few niggling, tiny ticks above the eagle's right (facing) wing, yet all else is essentially pristine. PCGS Population: 10 in 67 (2 in 67+), 0 finer (3/26).(Registry values: P2)
