Description

1861-S Quarter Dollar, MS62
Sole Example in Mint State

1861-S 25C MS62 NGC. Briggs 1-A. A heavy vertical die line appears in the horizontal obverse shield lines on this variety. The 1861-S Seated Liberty quarter comes from a limited mintage of 96,000 pieces, most of which have not survived in any grade approaching Mint State. Even as recently as several months ago, no Mint State pieces were known. Today, that reality has changed. While PCGS reports no Mint State submissions, and NGC lists this lone MS62 coin in Mint State -- a coin not previously recorded as Mint State in the censuses. Thus, this is the sole finest 1861-S quarter by multiple grade points. Areas of deep-blue, tan, and battleship-gray toning dominate the right obverse field and accent the obverse border, with a similar toning pattern on the reverse. Lilac-silver patina fills the gaps between the sporadic deep-gray toning. This San Francisco date is missing from many advanced collections.
