Description
1861-S Seated Liberty Quarter, XF40
Rare, Low-Mintage Survivor
1861-S 25C XF40 PCGS. Briggs 2-B. In the Jan. 11, 2008,
issue of the Coin Dealer Newsletter, Larry Briggs calls the
1861-S Seated quarter a low-mintage issue in two varieties that is
"plagued by problems." The rarity of the issue escalates with
grade, with XF coins rare, AU pieces very rare, and true Mint State
coins unknown. This example offers powder-gray surfaces with some
charcoal rim toning, and shows the late die state of the reverse
with the mintmark about to connect to the fletchings. A
still-lustrous piece with some mint-green accents on the lower
reverse. Population: 4 in 40, 11 finer (8/10).(Registry values: P7)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23TU, PCGS# 5455, GSID# 5194)
