Description

1862-S 25C AU 50 Dipped SEGS. Briggs 2-A. A very scarce coin in all grades, About Uncirculated representations such as this are few and far between in today's numismatic marketplace. In his Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Quarters, Larry Briggs states that this issue is, "Usually seen in low grades and with problems of some sort." The present specimen, while an undeniable AU specimen in terms of overall wear, unfortunately vindicates the second half of Briggs' statement. Beneath the blanket of hazy-golden toning, the surfaces evidence light hairlines that are probably the result of an old cleaning. In addition, the reverse displays several digs, the most notable of which has obliterated part of the horizontal shield lines. Despite its impairments, this specimen represents an important opportunity for the budget-minded specialist.
