1865-S Quarter, MS66+
Outstanding Quality
1865-S 25C MS66+ PCGS. CAC. The 1865-S quarter had a mintage
of just 41,000 coins, nearly all of which entered circulation in
California and surrounding states at a time when silver coins were
in extremely short supply. A short distance to the east, the
Comstock Lode and other Nevada silver mines were responsible for
most of the expanding silver supply in the United States, but much
of the newly mined silver was shipped east to replenish the supply
diminished by the end of the Civil War. The West was awash in
precious metal, yet precious little of it stayed in the area to
become minor coinage. The typical surviving 1865-S quarter is well worn, with an average certified grade of just 40.1. The example offered here is far finer and is the sole finest PCGS representative, edging out a single MS66 coin (1/14). PCGS has graded a mere 11 examples in all Mint State grades and NGC adds another 16 pieces to the combined certified population. The two grading services have seen a mere 98 coins in all grades and the issue seldom appears in auctions, including Heritage's.
This magnificent MS66+ coin has gorgeous cartwheel luster and bold design motifs showing only slight weakness among a few stars. The surfaces have thickly frosted luster with delicate champagne and iridescent toning on the obverse and brilliant ivory luster on the reverse. Population: 2 in 66 (1 in 66+), 0 finer (1/14).
