Description

1866-S Seated Quarter, MS65
Second-Finest Certified
First-Year With Motto Issue

1866-S 25C MS65 NGC. Briggs 1-A. Challenging in any grade, the 1866-S Motto quarter is extremely rare in Mint State. PCGS and NGC combined report only 14 pieces in all Uncirculated grades combined, led by an MS66 PCGS example and followed by this MS65 NGC coin. There is little difference in those two coins in technical quality, while the present near-brilliant example conceivably presents the better eye appeal. A few faint hints of gold toning drift inward from the rims of this otherwise untoned quarter. A small 28,000-piece mintage represents the first year of the S-mint Motto reverse -- a feature that largely went unnoticed by the public. This is a well-known example that was previously held in Eugene H. Gardner's exceptional collection of Seated coinage. The strike is razor-sharp and a few tiny ticks to not detract. Flashy silver luster complements the inarguably strong visual impact of this splendid Gem example. NGC Census: 1 in 65, 0 finer (3/25).
