Description
1870-CC Quarter Dollar, AG3
Rare First-Year Issue, CAC Endorsed
1870-CC 25C AG3 PCGS. CAC. Briggs 1-A. The mintage was low
-- only 8,340 pieces were struck at the Carson City Mint. There was
little numismatic attention paid to the mintage since collectors
had little interest in mintmarks. Augustus G. Heaton noted, "It has
the smallest coinage of the CC series and is exceedingly rare." The
coins circulated in the old West to attrition, where "two bits"
(the quarter dollar) was a popular charge for many items and
services -- a haircut and/or a shave, a shot of whiskey at a
saloon, a sack of flour, or basic meals. A two-bit room provided
lodging. This About Good 3 quarter is remarkable for the grade. The rims blend into the fields and engulf some of the legends, but all central elements including the date and the all-important mintmark are clearly outlined. Warm-gray toning in the fields lightens to silver-gray on the raised motifs. A bit of sky-blue toning exists at Liberty's foot. CAC endorsement confirms high quality for the grade. PCGS Population: 10 in 3, 69 finer; CAC: 4 in 3, 13 finer (4/26).
