    1870-CC Quarter Dollar, Bright AU53
Tied for the Third Finest Certified

1870-CC 25C AU53 NGC. The 1870-CC quarter dollar saw a small mintage of 8,340 pieces. Rusty Goe writes in The Mint on Carson Street that this issue "is unquestionably the second rarest date (behind the 1873-CC Without Arrows) in the Seated Liberty quarter series, the rarest in Uncirculated condition, and is considered one of the most desirable classic rarities (one of the Top 25) in all of U.S. coinage." The certified population reports confirm Goe's assertions. NGC and PCGS combined have graded 76 pieces in all levels of preservation, including the NGC MS64 piece that once reposed in the Eliasberg Collection, the only certified Uncirculated example.

The present AU53 specimen is one of two so-graded, trailing only a PCGS AU55 and the former Eliasberg coin. Its bright surfaces display splashes of soft cobalt-blue and gold-orange that appear under magnification. Luster resides in the protected areas, and the strike is typical for the date with the stars flat in the centers but otherwise sharp. The eagle's wing feathers, often weak, are bold on this example. There are few appreciable marks and the reverse is quite choice. The rough, porous surfaces often seen on Carson City quarters from 1870-1873 (thought to be from improper annealing) do not significantly affect this piece. This specimen possesses great eye appeal and will serve as the hallmark of a Seated quarter collection. Census: 1 in 53, 1 finer (11/13).
