Rare 1870-CC Quarter, AU Details

1870-CC 25C --Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details. Specific die characteristics, especially the mintmark, should be understood by anyone who is thinking of buying an 1870-CC Quarter Dollar. Altered dates and added mintmarks, while not a major problem today, still exist. The top of C in AMERICA is straight, except for a slight indentation at the right side of that letter. The two elements of the mintmark are widely spaced with the first C lower than the second. This reverse die continued in use through early 1873.
The premier issue from the Carson City Mint, generally considered to be the most challenging in the Seated Quarter series. Only 8,340 pieces were struck, and very few are known today in any grade. Indeed, only 65 specimens have been certified by NGC and PCGS combined (some of which are undoubtedly resubmissions) and just one of these is in Mint State. The AU details specimen offered here exhibits semi-bright silvery surfaces that are moderately hairlined. A few small toning spots are noted in the upper right (facing) obverse field.(Registry values: P9)
