Amazing AU 1870-CC Seated Quarter Rarity, Problem-Free Surfaces

1870-CC 25C AU 53 NGC. The Carson City Mint produced Seated quarters for only eight years between 1870 and 1878. The year 1874 serves as a useful division within this group, not only because no CC-mint quarters were produced this year, but also because the 1870-1873 issues are markedly rarer than their 1875-1878 counterparts. The leader of the first group in terms of rarity, and the rarest collectible Seated quarter from any Mint, is the 1870-CC. While limited numbers of 1870-CC Seated dollars were probably saved as the first of their kind, fate was not as kind to the similarly dated quarters. Apparently, all of the 8,340 quarters produced this year entered circulation and remained there, an assertion that seems likely since this issue in currently unknown in Mint State. What's more, NGC and PCGS can only muster two About Uncirculated examples between them, an AU 55 PCGS example and the present AU 53 NGC specimen (7/00).
Both sides of this coin display a glossy sheen with mottled cobalt-blue, gunmetal-gray, and pearl-gray shades. The rough, porous surfaces that often characterize early CC-mint issues are not a detracting feature on this coin. The peripheral details are softly impressed, most notably over the star centrils, but the balance of the features are boldly defined. For both technical merit and aesthetic appeal, this coin wins our endorsement for inclusion in the finest collection of Carson City coinage.
Ex: Purchased by an anonymous Carson City specialist from an eastern dealer by private treaty sale; Rasmussen Sale (Superior, 2/98), lot 2031, where it was purchased by the consignor; 1999 Chicago ANA Sale (Heritage, 8/99), lot 6278, where it realized $24,150.
