    Description

    1872-S Quarter Dollar, VF20
    Elusive in All Grades

1872-S 25C VF20 PCGS. The mintage of 83,000 pieces implies scarcity, but the 1872-S is even more difficult to locate than that figure suggests. Perhaps a portion of the mintage was melted in 1873 due to the weight change specified in the Act of 1873. Gray-green, gold, blue-gray and hints of violet appear on this circulated example. Both sides display even wear, adding to the attractiveness. A scratch extends from the banner near the U in TRUST through a portion of the eagle's left wing. Population: 3 in 20, 16 finer (3/13).(Registry values: P8) (NGC ID# 23UT, PCGS# 5483)
