Description

    Impressive XF 1872-S Quarter Dollar

1872-S 25C XF40 NGC. A mere 83,000 quarters were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1872. A low mintage, combined with heavy attrition of coins in California during this period make this an especially scarce issue. It has been some time since we have seen this issue in one of our sales that has not been damaged or cleaned in some way. This example displays silver-gray surfaces that are devoid of mentionable abrasions. Perhaps lightly cleaned with some wispy hairlines on each side. Advanced Seated Quarter collectors and specialists are keenly aware of the difficulty locating examples of this issue. In the past 12 years, since we started maintaining our auction archives, we have handled just 17 examples of this date, and only four of those were nicer than this example.(Registry values: P8) (NGC ID# 23UT, PCGS# 5483)
