Description

1872-S 25C Fine 12 "Lite Marks, Cleaned" SEGS. Briggs 1-A, the only known dies. An unknowing numismatist apparently cleaned this specimen in a failed effort to lighten the deep charcoal toning that abounds on both the obverse and the reverse. A few light pinscratches about Liberty's neck, as well as heavy indentations throughout the upper reverse, account for this coin's below average detail and eye appeal for the grade. Despite its problems, however, this is an affordable representation of this low mintage (83,000 pieces) San Francisco quarter.
