Description
Rare Gem 1875-CC Quarter
Ex: Pittman
1875-CC 25C MS65 NGC. Only 140,000 Seated Liberty quarters
were minted at Carson City in 1875. David Akers calls this date a
"scarce and underrated issue." Collecting branch mint quarters did
not become popular until a later era, and 19th century auction
appearances are few and far between. One early appearance was in
the George Earl Collection (Henry Chapman, 6/1912), lot 3235, where
the issue was offered as part of a group lot of quarters. The present coin was featured in the John Jay Pittman Collection Part II (Akers, 5/1998), lot 1352. To quote Akers description, "Sharply struck with lustrous semi-prooflike fields and superb medium reddish-gold, violet and blue toning. There are only a few light contact marks and hairlines in the fields and, overall, the coin has an outstanding appearance." NGC has certified five coins at the Gem level, with none finer, while PCGS has grade only three coins in MS65, with none finer (3/09).(Registry values: P4)
