Description

1877 25C MS 63 SEGS. This coin's powerful impression leaves no detail incomplete. Untoned and lustrous, the fields display modest reflectivity as well as a few light contact marks that preclude a near-gem designation. Despite an original mintage of 10,911,200 business strikes, Larry Briggs (1991) speculates that the Mint retained many of these coins and then melted them to provide silver bullion for the new Morgan dollar of 1878.
