    Description

    1878-S Quarter Dollar, MS64
    Conditionally Rare

1878-S 25C MS64 PCGS. CAC. The San Francisco Mint struck 140,000 quarter dollars in 1878, one of the few minor silver coins struck at any of the branch mints once Morgan dollar coinage began. It is likely that all of the 1878-S quarters, half dollars, and Trade dollars were minted in the first quarter, before Morgan production began. While the half dollar is the best known of those coins, the quarter is an important issue as well, and it is rarely seen in Mint State grades. This Choice Mint State piece, housed in a green-label PCGS holder, has frosty silver luster and sharp design details beneath delicate champagne toning. The splendid surfaces show only trivial marks. Population: 4 in 64, 3 finer (7/13).(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 23VA, PCGS# 5510)
