Description
1878-S 25C AU 50 SEGS. Briggs 1-A, the only known dies. Largely untoned save for pale russet highlights about the lower reverse, this coin displays lustrous surfaces and scattered contact marks that befit a circulated coin. The strike is sharp throughout and all details are readily evident despite light wear across the highpoints. In addition to a low original delivery of only 140,000 pieces, this S-mint issue owes its scarcity to widespread melting in anticipation of heavy Morgan dollar coinage.
