1880 Seated Quarter, MS68
Impeccable Preservation
Sole Finest at PCGS
1880 25C MS68 PCGS. This MS68 PCGS-certified 1880 Seated
Liberty quarter is the sole finest graded of this issue at PCGS, a
coin of unequalled quality and great aesthetic appeal. The business
strike issues of many Seated Liberty silver coins were low
throughout the 1880s, a complicated situation attributed to two
factors: One was the incessant demand for Morgan dollars, as
mandated by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878. The second was the
resumption of specie payments in 1879 and monetary
interexchangeability for the first time since the beginning of the
Civil War. Much silver coinage that had been exported to Canada
flowed back across the border to enter circulation, as the United
States had successfully extinguished inflation. There was no longer
a premium for silver coinage or gold coinage or for gold-backed
paper currency.Radiant cartwheel luster appears on silver-white surfaces that are untoned on the obverse and orange-gold-rimmed on the reverse, showing impeccable preservation and a strike every bit as nice. Die lapping has effaced part of Liberty's torso area -- an effect we do not recall seeing previously -- and a tiny planchet flaw appears, as made, on Liberty's cheek. Neither of these affect the grade nor the high aesthetic appeal. Population: 1 in 68, 0 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P1)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23VC, PCGS# 5512)
