Description

1857 25C VG 8 SEGS, Briggs 1-A Die State, a die break that originates within the eagle's beak and trickles down its neck has prompted Larry Briggs to label this advanced striking the "Puking Eagle" variety; 1857 Fine 15, Briggs 9-I, a rim cud on the reverse above STA of STATES is the most readily visible diagnostic feature of this newly discovered die variety; 1857 Fine 15, Briggs 10-J, somewhat heavily worn and evenly toned, this piece displays a prominent rim cud below QUAR; 1857 VF 20, Briggs 5-E, the "Compass Point" reverse, a feature that occurs on many issues of Seated quarters, manifests itself in 1857 on this die variety; 1857 VF 30 Cleaned, Briggs 13-M, this coin's untoned surfaces have little chance of hiding its numerous hairlines from view; 1857 XF 40 Holed, Briggs 8-H, in addition to faint recutting on the lower loop of the 5, this darkly toned piece also displays a large hole above and to the right of Liberty's head that obliterates star 8 and the corresponding reverse devices; 1857 XF 40 "Lite Corrosion", Briggs 12-L, the corrosion is confined to scattered areas of the right obverse and does not disturb the balance of this coin's lightly toned, smooth surfaces; 1857 XF 40, Briggs 3-C, a pleasing coin despite obvious wear, the surfaces exhibit even olive-gray patina with blushes of yellow-gold intermingled throughout; and an 1857 XF 45 Cleaned Obverse, Briggs 11-K, while this coin was mounted in its holder with the reverse forward to display the prominent rim cud over the NI of UNITED, its orientation also serves as a vain effort to conceal the obverse's heavy hairlines. All coins are SEGS encapsulated.
