Original Near-Gem 1838 No Drapery Seated Quarter

1838 25C No Drapery MS64 PCGS. Briggs 1-A. Christian Gobrecht's original design for the Seated Liberty Quarter differed markedly from the Robert Ball Hughes modification that made its debut in 1840. Most importantly for type collectors, the 1838, 1839, and 1840-O No Drapery productions lacked drapery folds below Liberty's right (facing) elbow. Briggs 1-A is the only readily collectible variety of the 1838 Seated Quarter. An important date for type purposes, the 1838 is also a conditionally challenging coin that Briggs assigns an R.4 rating in Unc. This original example is overlaid with soft olive-gray color. The otherwise razor sharp strike wanes ever so slightly on the right border areas of each side, and a few wispy abrasions in the reverse field are all that seem to bar this coin from an even higher grade. Population: 21 in 64, there are only five Gems finer (3/04).
