Lustrous Gem 1866/1866 Rays Nickel, FS-301

1866/1866 5C Rays MS65 NGC. VP-002, FS-301, formerly FS-001. Fletcher-08. All four date digits are repunched prominently, with the first set visible without a loupe east of and higher than the second set. There are three other similar Repunched Date varieties listed in Fletcher and Cherrypickers' for the 1866 Rays. While the Mint had made copper-nickel Indian cents since 1859, that composition was 88:12 copper to nickel. The three cent nickels that debuted in 1865 and the 1866 Shield nickels were a much-harder 75:25 composition--one that the Mint employees clearly had much more difficulty in both die and coin production, judging by the many errors from the first years of both denominations. This piece has generous luster radiating from pristine nickel-gray surfaces. The strike is absolutely marvelous, and wispy die cracks on each side add even more character.(Registry values: P4)
