Description

1866/1866 Rays Nickel, MS64
FS-302, Widely Repunched Date

1866/1866 5C Rays, Repunched Date, FS-302, MS64 PCGS. CAC. The FS-302 Cherrypickers' variety is one of several dramatic repunched date varieties among the 1866 Rays nickels. All four digits are boldly repunched east of the primary date. While the variety is easily available in low grades, it is rarely seen in the near-Gem condition of this sharp and lustrous example. The jumble of repunching is clearly visible. Elsewhere on the coin, several obverse die cracks demonstrate a middle die state for the variety. Original silver-gray patina adds eye appeal as confirmed by CAC approval. Population: 2 in 64, 1 finer (3/24).
